The air is full of the smells of Christmas at Faith Mountain Herbs and Antiques in Sperryville as a miniature army of workers swing into high gear preparing the orders placed by a growing number of drop-in and catalogue shoppers.
Cloves, orange, cinnamon, spice, sandlewood, evergreen - the aromas are the first thing that strike visitors to the village’s Main Street shop.
“We get used to it,” said Doris Jenkins, when asked if it was an added treat to work with the array of scents. “We take it for granted - just the same way that everyone who lives in Rappahannock takes the colors of the fall leaves for granted. We had a gentleman come in here one day and ask if we were charging for the smell. He said we ought to — it smelled sooo good.”
“It’s like having your head in a perfume bottle.” That’s how Paula Klatko describes working at Faith Mountain. She’s been at Sherrie Woodward’s shop for three years, moving from behind-the-counter to bookkeeping to filling wholesale orders as the business has expanded.
“Wholesale is wonderful. It’s so fast. I could keep busy all day just handling requests for dried herbs. People want them in bunches—mostly for appearances. Sherrie hit the market at the right point,” Klatko said.
