the special effects of thunder, lightning and wind kept the audience far from calm. The power and impact of the scene was greatly enhanced by a song “Tornado” which was written and performed by Bill Abernathy, an extremely talented local musician. Then when the children started dying in the aisles and were carried away by the adults, there were few dry eyes.
Another moving scene in a different way was the confrontation between moonshiner Robert Pritchard and outsider Freeman Allen. After getting over his suspicion of the stranger, Pitchard offered to share his liquor. Allen reciprocated and was no longer a stranger, for the moonshiner was able to identify him precisely by the taste of his brew. We won’t say how for it would spoil the suspence for those who are going to see the show this weekend. We will say that Pritchard and Allen were two audience favorites, as was Waldron O’Connor cast as George Brown. O’Connor opposed establishing the county seat at Woodville because the county seat is “no place to raise children,” what with the “poker playin’ and likker drinkin’.” ^During the scene called “Court f)ay” the cards and drinks come out, showing just how wild Washington was in those olden times.
