Homemakers9 achievement night

The Extension Homemakers’ Achievement Night will be held on Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sperryville Fire Hall. The evening events will include a special program and a silent auction. The public is invited to attend. For further information, call the Extension office at 6753619.

Shooting match

A shooting match will begin on Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. at the Castleton Fire Hall. Prizes will include hams, turkeys and oysters. For more information, call 937-4065 or 937-5506.

‘Mrs. Soffel’

Based on an actual event in 1901 in Pittsburgh, “Mrs. Soffel” tells the tragic story of a prison warden’s unstable wife who falls in love with a prisoner, helps him escape and runs off with him. Diane Keaton and Mel Gibson star in the lead roles. The film will be shown on Nov. 9 and 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Gay St. Theatre and is rated PG.

Mental Health Association meeting

The Mental Health Association in Rappahannock will meet Nov. 13 at 4 p.m. in the Clopton House, Washington, in Lee Nettles’ office.

DAR luncheon meeting

“Our Country,” the theme of the administration of the Culpeper Minute Men Chapter NSDAR, will be highlighted when the Virginia State DAR Regent, Mrs. G.E. Honts, Jr., of Eagle Rock, speaks on “George Washington — The Man” to the Culpeper Chapter members and guests Nov. 12.

The luncheon meeting, presided over by Mrs. Dale Metzinger, Regent, will be held at the Culpeper Country Club beginning at noon. In addition to the talk by Mrs. Honts, the president general’s message will be read by Mrs. Zillah Gutowski, the national defense information given by Mrs. Edgar Puryear and the devotionals by Mrs. Woodruff Kearns.

Teen weekend

A teen weekend will be held at the 4-H Center from Feb. 7-9. More information will be in future issues of the News.

Sewing by satellite tips

All sewing enthusiasts take note! November 7 and 21, Beth Stout, Home Economics Extension Agent, will conduct two workshops to pass on the information she received this month at the sewing videoconference.

Some highlights of the workshop will include ideas on working with the newest fabrics, adding personal and creative touches to sewing projects, home decorating qjeas, helpful hints from professionals and tips for sewing for profit. In order to insure adequate distribution of materials, call the Extension Office at 675-3619.

Mt. Salem Baptist Church will hold a praise service on Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. featuring The Angelic Voices. For information, call 987-8604 or 636-1914.

Anniversary banquet

Mary Magdalene Chapter #208 of the Eastern Star in Front Royal will celebrate its 34th anniversary on Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Quality Inn in Front Royal. Margaret Coleman, of Arlington, will be guest speaker and donations are $14. 4-H volunteer leaders’ workshop

The Extension Office will host a 4-H volunteer leaders’ workshop today from 4-5:30 p.m. in the courthouse. Information will be provided on the purpose and organizational structure of 4-H clubs. Water Withdrawal Act conference
