apprehended Friday when he approached the highway to hitchhike his way to freedom.
The man was one of about 10 convicts working on Rt. 638 near Woodville last week. At about 2:30 p.m., the escapee made a break over an embankment. A guard fired twice, but the fleeing convict managed to hide in some brush.
After hiding out in Bessie Belle Mountain, the convict worked his way to the Blackwater area on U.S. 522. He tried to hitchhike, but the first car to come along was that of a state trooper. The convict was returned to Culpeper Camp 11.
Coaches Dave Layman and A1 Ballard, new to Rappahannock County schools, started basketball practice this week.
D.S. Butler, resident engineer with the state highway department, said that a flashing traffic light will be installed on U.S. 522 near Va. 1001, at the sharp curve in Sperryville.
