She went on to write songs and master the Appalachian dulcimer, the fiddle and the fivestring banjo.
From her native Baltimore, she moved on to the coffee houses and clubs of Canada, her own country and bluegrass radio show, the recording studio and concert halls, festivals, clubs and schools across the country.
She was the first woman to take first place in the West Virginia State Folk Festival’s old time banjo contest, winning back-to-back crowns in 1981 and 1982. She’s been featured on Garrison Keillor’s phenomenally popular radio show, A Prairie Home Companion, and national Public Radio’s All Things Considered.
She has starred on television as well, in WETA’s Music from Home, Canadian television’s Troupers and Nashville Cable Network’s Fire on the Mountain.
Ms. Fink’s concert at the Gay Street Theater in Washington, Va., will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8.
Tickets, available only at the door, will be $6 for the general public and $4 for students. The performance is sponsored by the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community.
