And then, of course, there was the historic fact that for the first time a black, Wilder, and a woman, T’erry, were holding ^wn the second and third spots on a major party ticket in the commonwealth. It was all too much for some Virginia voters to cope with, and many of them, from the outset, made no effort to cope.
The effect of the formal entry of blacks and women into the competition for statewide office is one of the long-term questions which those historians of the future will be studying.
But for the moment, the voters of the Old Dominion are wrapping up an election season which has been, at once, one of the most apathetic yet one of the most interesting one of the quietest yet one of the most historic, in the long chronicle of the commonwealth.
