But that, Hanny said, is not the case.
Graduate students seem to be “pursuing degrees out of a sense of pride and professionalism rather than for status or money,” Hanny said. “There isn’t a quick or direct payback for coming to graduate school.”
Although enrollments in the education schools in colleges across the country dipped considerably in the early 70s, the number of college graduates going into teaching has been rising steadily. Plus, a National Teacher Examination is being used for the first time.
But good test scores and enrollment figures don’t tell the whole story, said Hanny. The best way for the parent to find out if their child’s school is a good one is to visit the school.
“Look for intelligent people who are on the ball,” Hanny said. “Talk to the principal, or to the teacher. If you’re confronted by someone reasonably intelligent and competent, that’s the best clue to what’s going on in the school.”
