Recently the Culpeper Memorial Hospital, the Auxiliary, and the community lost a very special person. Mary McNeil Willis spent her lifetime doing for others, always being there when needed, and, most importantly, being a special friend to many. We have lost a good friend.

To me, she was not only a friend, but also an advisor and counselor. There was never a time in Mary’s schedule when she could not make herself available if you needed her. A pat on the shoulder or a hug said what words could not say. The memories of the times that we spent together, whether in a meeting or just talking, are priceless.

When I think of Mary Willis, I think of a poem written by Helen Steiner Rice entitled “The Golden Chain of Friendship”. A part of the poem reads, “Time can’t destroy its beauty for, as long a memory lives, years can’t erase the pleasure that the joy of friendship gives. ”

We have lost a good friend, but we are better people just for knowing her.
