Also, Dr. Werner Krebser got one write-in vote at Flint Hill for the House of Delegates. Also in Flint Hill, one vote was cast for Bozo the Clown.
Statewide results show State Sen. Wilder of Richmond narrowly defeated his opponent with 665,459 (52 percent). Because of his victory, Mr. Wilder will give up the Senate seat he has held for 16 years.
State Sen. Chichester received 618,111 votes (48 percent) statewide.
Of the three Democratic candidates, Ms. Terry, 37, made the strongest showing in Fauquier. The Patrick County delegate received 4,487 votes (54.1 percent) in the county. Republican opponent Del. W. R. (Buster) O’Brien of Virginia Beach received 3,810 votes (45.9 percent) here. Ms. Terry won 10 of 12 local precincts.
Unofficially, Ms. Terry collected 791,723 votes (61 percent) statewide; Mr. O’Brien received 497,351 (39 percent). The victory means Ms. Terry will give up the House seat she has held for seven years.
Unofficially, about 1.3 million Virginia voters went to the polls Tuesday. That turnout represents about half the number registered to vote in the state. In Fauquier, 8,349 (49.7) voted in the gubernatorial race. According to the Fauquier registrar’s office, 16,786 county residents were eligible to vote in the election.
Tuesday’s turnout was slightly lower than statewide election figures for the 1981 race, partly because heavy rains caused severe flooding, making travel difficult.
Four years ago, in the race between Democrat Robb and Republican J. Marshall Coleman, more than 1.4 million voters went to the polls versus about 1.3 million Tuesday.
Leading his party’s sweep of the top three statewide spots, Gov. Robb easily won the election in 1981, receiving 769,422 votes (53.7 percent), to become Virginia’s first Democatic governor in 12 years.
