Brits to tour Va. sites
About 60 visitors from Great Britain will tour a number of historic sites in Virginia starting Saturday.
The visitors are lenders to the National Gallery of Art’s “Treasure Houses of Britain,” an exhibit that showcases much of the best art collected over the centuries in British country houses.
The tour will include stops at Monticello, Stratford Plantation, Kenmore and Oak Hill, among other places. The visitors also will make a trip to Springfield Mall in northern Virginia to see the J.C. Penny store where Prince Charles and Princess Diana will view the department store chain’s “Best of Britain” promotion Nov. 11.
Some kerosene unsafe
VIRGINIA BEACH — Kerosene sold in pumps at service stations in South Hampton Roads may be unsafe for use in home heaters, according to the Virginia Beach Fire Prevention Bureau.
High-grade kerosene, grade 1-K, is available only in sealed containers on store shelves in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth and Chesapeake. Gas station pumps sell only grade 2-K kerosene, which has a higher sulfUr content and therefore is not recommended for use in unvented heaters, fire officials said.
Use of the lower grade kerosene could cause greater soot buildup, increasing chances of a fire, said Fire Inspector W.W. Davis. Grade 2-K kerosene also causes low emissions of sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide, which could pose health risks, he said.
