Wakefield scored twice again on goals by Emeterio Gomez, of Huntly, and Michael King, of Warrenton. With two goals by Highland during the second quarter and another by Latell, the score stood at 42 at halftime.
The score remained 4-2 for the balance of the game. Commenting on the game, Coach Gary Leake said the team had done a good job and that the boys were functioning well as a team in terms of cooperation and leadership.
The junior varsity team has two remaining games in the season scheduled against Grymes and Woodberry Forest.
The Wakefield volleyball team completed its first season with a first win and a respectable showing in a tournament at Emmanuel School in Manassas.
The week’s first game was their last home match against Tara Reston. In the absence of injured Coach Cindy Baker, Gary Leake, Wakefield’s physical education director, coached the team to their first win of the season. Wakefield crushed Tara Reston in the first game of the match, winning 15-0.
The team went on to win the second and third games 15-12 and 15-10 respectively, sweeping the match 30.
“The whole team played, and the whole team played well,” commented Leake. “It was a great game.”
The following day, the team traveled to Word of Life School for the final game of the regular season. This time the team was not as lucky as they lost the match 0-3. This defeat dropped the team’s record to 1-9 going into the Delaney Athletic Conference Tournament.
On Saturday, the team traveled to Emmanuel School for the tournament. The girls played well and won their first match of the double elimination tournament. In the second match, they faced Tara Reston, losing the first game.
Wakefield struck back with a solid 15-7 win in the second game only to lose the third and final game of that match, 15-10. In the final match, the team was defeated after dropping the first two games.
The Wakefield team thus finshed their first season with a record )f 2-11. The new team has generated nuch interest at the school, so much jo that there has been a request to brm a boys’ team next year.
