building has a butterfly roof,” said Superintendent Robert Estabrook. “Since these heavy rains, though, the roofs in the front hallway area and in the gym have been the first to break loose.”
He said he does not fault the consultant since there is no scientific or sure way to determine when a roof might leak.
The butterfly, or V-shaped, roof is part of the original school building built in 1959. School workers have placed plastic sheets along walls to direct dripping water from the front hallway roof into trash cans. One front classroom and the library have slight leaks, and plastic hangs from the gym ceiling to a trash can to prevent damage to the gym floor.
Estabrook said workers had tarred down heavy plastic sheets on portions of the roof in a temporary effort to stop the leaks. “We’ve gotten it pretty well stopped now,” he said.
Steps toward permanent measures will begin when the rain stops and the low bidder on the new roof portion has a chance to look at the old portion.
“He will then give us a bid, but I don’t believe we will be able to have the work done for under the $28,000 budgeted,” Estabrook said. “If the bid is more, we’ll have to ask the supervisors for supplemental funding.”
Although the leaks are a matter of concern to Estabrook, he said what can be done is being done to repair the roof temporarily until permanent work can be done.
“The leaks wouldn’t disrupt classes,” Estabrook said. “We dosed school because of the rain outside, not inside.”
The very essence of a free government consists in considering offices as public trusts, bestowed for the good of the country, and not for the benefit of ar individual or a party.
