The unemployment rate in Rappahannock County soared to 12.9 percent in September, the highest monthly rate since August 1982 when it reached 13.4 percent.
The sharp increase, which skyrocketed from 5.3 percent last month, is being blamed on an increase of almost 200 in the job force which exaggerates the employment percentage figure in such a small sample.
“I don’t see any impending doom," said Jackie Cooke of the Virginia Employment Commission office in Culpeper.
Some 2,857 people in Rappahannock were looking for work in September, 2,488 — or 87.1 percent — found it.
In August, 2,665 were in the job market and 2,524 persons found employment.
Not only did the number of people employed decrease in the September figures, but the number of people looking for work increased by nearly 10 percent.
