election year lethargy had been in the names on the ballots. All of them, with the possible exception of Baliles, were almost totally unknown to the state’s vast electorate just a few months ago.
Virginia voters are suspicious of anything new, and here was an unknown gaggle of strange new people running for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general.
Where were the names they knew, and either revered or hated? Where were the Byrds, Godwins, Daltons, Howells, Millers, Robb and all the rest which they had remembered seeing on the statewide ballots?
Those gave your apathetic voter a sense of continuity of security and a feeling that he or she was nestling safely in the bosom of worry-free Virginia conservatism.
But this new crowd was another matter. Best not get involved with them until more was known about them.
