In October 1983, the unemployment rate was 3.5 percent; in 1984 it was 3.5 percent.
So far in 1985, the lowest singlemonth figure was in March when only 2.2 percent of the job force was unable to find work.
The last time that the local monthly unemployment rate topped double figures was in February 1983, when it hit 10.5 percent.
“We didn’t have any layoffs in Rappahannock that we know of,” Cooke said.
While the unemployment rate was 5.3 percent a month ago, it was 5.9 percent in August.
In Virginia, the unemployment rate in October was 5.3 percent, the same rate recorded in September.
