Konick referred to public hearings as “test balloons.” In addition, Konick submitted to the board a petition containing 120 signatures in protest of the site.
Supervisors, who are currently engaged in a lawsuit with local animal rights activists demanding the county to conform to state laws requiring a shelter, originally planned to place the dog pound on private property owned by game warden Jack Bruce.
At their Sept. 9 meeting, Supervisors, who were informed by Bruce that he no longer wished to sell property for the site, voted instead to locate the shelter on the county-owned grounds adjacent to the abandoned school building.
In his letter to Supervisors, Konick wrote that the couple has owned that land in Scrabble since 1960 and plan to make it their “permanent residence in the very near future.”
Konick also said the couple is “deeply concerned...that the board made this decision without any advance notice” which, he said, represents a switch from past practices of conducting a hearing. The county held a hearing to discuss a proposed landfill.
