campaigns in Virginia are very difficult to engineer. The reason for that is, with the exception of a very narrow range of politically acceptable issues, any positive position is suspect of being tainted, however slightly, with — perish the word! —liberalism. Thus efforts at political creativity in the state are pretty much limited to education and law enforcement, with the caveat that the politician has to handle education very gingerly.
Thus we had a situation where every candidate, from the nominee for governor on down, came down hard on law ’n’ order and sounded a good deal of the time as if he were running for sheriff. After a few months of this it became a thin diet on which to nourish voter interest.
