It didn’t quite work out that way.
Rustic followed rescue vehicles back to the Washington Fire Department — by virtue of the blue light barely visible through the fog, she said — where Ray Pullen offered to take his four-wheel drive into the hollow.
“Water was up all the way to the headlights” of the vehicle, Rustic said, and the party turned around and retreated to the fire department.
Pullen had a better idea.
He cranked up the department’s tanker truck and headed back to the bridge, crawling through at a turtle’s pace.
“It took quite a long time,” she said. “I don’t think we ever got out of first or second gear.”
