As the final week of the soccer season has arrived, the varsity team from Wakefield School has won several difficult games and, for the second year in a row, has remained undefeated in the Delaney Athletic Conference.
Last week, the team both completed this season undefeated in the conference and won one of the best games it has ever played.
In the first game of the week, Wakefield hosted Delaney Conference foe, Tara Reston. After two quick scores early in the game, Wakefield cruised to a 4-0 halftime lead. Then, after a goal from Tara Reston early in the second half, the Owls rebounded behind the scoring of Marc Foerstemann, of Huntly, to a 6-1 victory.
In the second game of the week, Wakefield concluded its season in the conference at Word of Life School. The team struggled throughout the first half and was not able to take advantage of scoring opportunities.
However, as the second half began with the score tied 2-2. Wakefield erupted by scoring three goals to conclude the game with a 5-2 score, thus giving Wakefield a perfect 7-0 record in the conference. The conference tournament is scheduled for this weekend.
In the final game of the week, Wakefield played perhaps the best soccer the team has played all season against a strong Madison team. After Madison went out to a 1-0 lead, team captain John Landis, of Front Royal, soon knotted the score at 1-1. Then, off an assL * from Larry Tarr, of Warrenton, David Rowzie, of Amissville, put Wakefield ahead by the score of 2-1. The team carried the lead into the half.
In the second half, the combination of Tarr and Rowzie hooked up three additional times to give Wakefield a 5-1 lead. With the aid of good defense from Jerry McDowell, of Warrenton, and Brian McGushin, of Haymarket, Wakefield held on for the 5-1 victory.
The Delaney Conference Tournament will be held at Wakefield on Nov. 9. Games are scheduled beginning at 8:30 a.m. with the final playoff game slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
