Reports such as “National at Risk” by the National Commission on Education resulted in a kind of crisis mentality among educators, many of whom became defensive about their profession.
Today, Hanny said, the crisis stories have subsided, “but there is no evidence that there are any profound differences in the quality of the teacher corps in this country. I suspect that the status of teachers or the state of education is a perceptual phenomenon. In general, I don’t think education is any better today than it was two years ago., In the long run, however, the widespread promotion of the importance of education has benefitted the field.”
Still, Hanny said he believes the quality of teachers and the education they provide is stable.
