Dispatchers relayed inquiries from nearby residents who asked if they should leave. “They evacuated us,” reported Georgia Walsworth as she waited at a friend’s house for the all-clear sign and word that she could return to her residence across the lane from the shed. “They said they were concerned about the chemicals. They didn’t know what was being burned.”
The fire was reported at around 3:30 p.m. Volunteers from Sperryville, Chester Gap, Flint Hill, Washington and Salem in Culpeper County arrived a few minutes later; they didn’t leave until almost midnight.
“Initially, the fire was fought with water until we found that there were spray materials in the shed,” reported Steve Leake, who was in charge of the control effort. He couldn’t say for certain what chemicals were burning.
