Like the bear in the children’s song, the German explorer John Lederer scaled the Blue Ridge mountains with great difficulty only to find another endless series of mountains — in this case the Alleghenies — rising even higher than the peak on which Lederer stood on an early spring day in 1669.
Lederer was a physician from Hamburg, a scholar and an explorer. He came to Virginia with the intention of finding a land route to the Pacific, or at the least, a bay or river connecting directly with that Western sea. The discovery of an easy trade route with Asia was on Lederer’s mind as he mounted a party with three Indian guides.
