At a special meeting last Friday, Rappahannock’s supervisors affirmed what farmers here have known for weeks: This spell of dry weather means disaster for the county’s agricultural production.
Reporting that crop losses will exceed $1 million, the board asked Gov. Gerald L. Baliles to declare a state of emergency in Rappahannock, clearing the way for local farmers to become eligible for federal assistance.
“The state has already requested damage assessment reports from us,” said Linda Henry, director of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) for Rappahannock and Warren counties. “I think that means the governor is ready to declare a state of emergency.”
