Participants in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program were honored recently at an informal breakfast held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Washington.
The RSVP program, sponsored by the Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services Center, provides volunteers to assist other members of the community with a variety of services. One of the most visible roles the volunteers play is providing transportation for others who, for many reasons, cannot drive themselves.
“There are many other services which the volunteers provide,” said Carolyn Szabad, RSVP volunteer supervisor. “Many are not as visible, but they are just as important. The most hours are spent on transportation, but many other important contributions are also involved,” including: - Assisting in the Community Services literacy project. - Providing clerical assistance to the Welfare Department. - Visiting and providing home support for the homebound elderly. - Tutoring and working as library aides in the elementary schools. - Cooking and serving meals at the Senior Nutrition Sites. - Working as volunteer aides at the Hospice of the Rapidan.
