ics still bouncing up and down. Twenty minutes later, as the riff came to an end, we reached seats — and space of our own. Up above the masses, we could appreciate the size of the mass. The stands were practically empty; almost 60,000 bodies were packed into a field usually reserved for 22 assorted quarterbacks, tackles, linemen and guards.
And the band played on. Done with the required long and boring number, the Dead were rocking again and the Heads were rocking with them. Dancers leaped into the air, taking it on faith that they would find space for a landing, and each time, like the Red Sea before Moses, the crowd parted. Spotlights moved across the field, and in the pool of light, arms lifted to the sky. It seemed as if everybody but us knew every word to every song. From our high vantage, we spotted thousands of balding and gray haired oldsters, vintage Dead Heads, some of them doctors, lawyers, bankers and leaders of government in the real world.
