The current rash of eras began in 1957 with the launching of Sputnik by the Russians. Era watchers immediately noted that in this new era, the world would need a new philosophy, new theology, and new economic, social, and political forms. But before these changes and accommodations could be made, a new and more demanding “era” was upon us, that of “nuclear biology” in which, it was said, the “nature of man” was to be changed — thus making irrelevant the earlier findings of philosophy, theology and social and political thought, which might have been useful to the creatures with the old “nature of man.”
