Ms. Szabad added that “the volunteers are extremely self-motivated. I see an assortment of wonderful skills brought to work at these projects. We have a very diverse program, which is becoming more so all the time.”
She explained that the program began about six years ago with a core membership of retired teachers. The main assistance was in providing transportation to the Mental Health Center, and visits to doctors and dentists, mainly in Culpeper.
The only remaining member of the original RSVP Advisory Council is retired teacher Barbara Gentry, who began her involvement by providing transportation. She has also served as the temporary supervisor of the Senior Meal Program.
The Volunteer Services participants in Planning District 9 provide more than 60,000 hours of service per year, which, if paid at minimum wage rates, would add up to more than $250,000 billed to the counties
