Alex Sharp, who took over management this year of the orchard owned by Wilbur Wright, said he stored nothing in the shed. Called in for consultation by the firefighters, he was on the scene for several hours. Mr. Sharp said he saw “something yellow — it could have been sulphur” in the old containers, but added that most of the containers “may have been empty.”
Once it was suspected that spray materials might be burning, “we looked up all the chemicals that could have been in there” to determine what to use in fighting the fire, Chief Leake said. “We couldn’t use water on account of the possibility of run-off.”
