The controversy about the protection of the town’#: water supply has been heating up ever since the supervisors announced in September that Lee Partnerships had filed an application with the state to operate a sanitary landfill on property off the Fodderstack Road (Rt. 628) about 1.5 miles north of the town limits. The Town Council communicated its grave concerns that, if the application is approved and operations are begun, liquids leaching from the site could seep through faults in the rock underlying the landfill and contaminate the underground aquifer which supplies the Town of Washington’s drinking water.
The proposed ordinance, scheduled for a public hearing at council’s regular monthly meeting last night (Nov. 12), would require that any “person, firm or corporation” must file an application with the town for approval of any waste disposal facility located within three miles of the town’s wells.
The application must contain the following:
• Name of the applicant.
• Location and description of the property where the proposed facility would be located.
• Names and addresses of all adjacent property owners.
