“In extreme cases of obvious abuse, outside intervention is necessary,” wrote one mother, a former social worker. “However, to expose children from normal, loving homes to exaggerated dramas. . .would only create problems where there are none.” The mother endorsed training for teachers in identifying and reporting suspected child abuse, although she maintained that in rural Rappahannock, with so many extended families, the problem will remain minimal. “But I draw the line at any counseling or dramatizing of this problem to my two children who attend RCES.”
“We must be sensitive to the strong feelings of parents,” Mr. Estabrook said. “If there is a request that a child not be exposed (to an educational program on child abuse) it should be honored.”
