“There are times when it’s more cost effective for the apple processors to buy foreign apple juice concentrate, dilute it and bottle it for sale,” said Mr. Sharp, who manages several county orchards. “This year, that’s not the case, and so we’re able to command a higher price for our small juice apples.”
Mr. Sharp said that apples for juice, delivered to National’s plant in Winchester, will bring $4.25 a hundredweight, a 75 cent increase per hundredweight from last year.
Canner apples, however, said Mr. Sharp, have dropped in price from $3.00 a bushel to $2.50.
The drop in price for the apples that ultimately end up as apple rings or applesauce comes from a overstock of applesauce that has carried over for several years.
However, apples of fresh eating quality have maintained a good price since the season opened, according to both Mr. Putnam and Mr. Sharp.
“Washington State had pretty much used up its apples from last year’s crop,” Mr. Sharp said. “That helps local growers, too.”
