“We can’t assume that child abuse isn’t possible in this county,” Superintendent Robert Estabrook warned the School Board at Tuesday night’s meeting. He recommended that educational programs on child abuse be offered to school children but that the programs be handled “very carefully.”
During the meeting Assistant Superintendent Tom Campbell outlined the agenda for the child abuse in-service program for teachers, scheduled for November 17. Topics to be covered by Mary Beth Williams, a specialist from the Falls Church schools, include descriptions of various types of child abuse, child abuse symptoms to look for in children, responses to a child who reports abuse, and future trends and programs to combat child abuse.
Earlier, in presenting the SPTA’s request for a child abuse program, the superintendent had maintained that an educational effort aimed at teachers must precede anything offered for youngsters. Mr. Estabrook said last night that in addition tc strong support from the SPT.A for a program for students.
