“Each year in the Soviet Union there is a national conference on the special problems of shells,” Dr. Librescu said. “I attended one once and the conference was excellent, very well-organized despite 500 participants. The proceedings were voluminous.”
“But the conference was closed - even to allied countries,” Dr. Librescu continued. “And the problems of aero-elasticity that were discussed were top secret. Everything was geared to the military industry.”
Zenon Mroz, another foreign visitor, was scheduled to come to Virginia Tech from Poland’s Institute for Fundamental Technical Research. He was not allowed to leave his country, however, because he angered officals by signing a petition of a political nature. Dr. Mroz’s misfortune underscores the dangers initially faced by Professor Librescu, since Poland is generally considered one of the more liberal of the Iron Curtain countries.
Considering the lengths to which these men had to go to pursue their life’s work unfettered by the bonds of government oversight makes living in a country where the pursuit of technology is as free as the pursuit of happiness all the more important.
