These were the official opening prices for apples, according to Steve Putnam of National Fruit:
Apples under 2 1/2 inches: $4 per hundredweight, up from $3.25 last year
Straight loads of juice apples: $4.25
Bulk apples: $7.75 per hundredweight for 2 3/4 inch Yorks and Golden Delicious, down from $8.25 a year ago.
U.S. 1 processing grade: York and Golden Delicious from $4 per hundredweight to $7.75 per hundredweight.
Local fruit stand owners pay up to $11 per hundredweight for mixed apples of good quality, according to Ivan Hall.
