According to August USDA figures, Virginia apple production will increase by 27 percent this harvest. Virginia has the sixth largest apple crop in the nation, harvesting 359 million pounds. Most of that yield comes from the Shenandoah Valley and nearby counties such as Rappahannock.
In the last year that there were available statistics - 1982 — Rappahannock contributed 18,382,613 pounds of apples to the state total, a hefty contribution to the state’s total from only 56 orchards, some of which are no longer harvested. The number of producing orchards declines every year in Rappahannock.
According to Mr. Sharp, prices paid for bulk apples are very much the same as those paid to orchardists of ten years ago.
