Dr. Librescu’s research was classified “top secret.” He had been working on an airplane called YUROM, a joint project with Yugoslavia and Romania, two countries which generally purchase their aircraft from the Soviet Union. After three years, during which he was able to get his work declassified, he was permitted to take his family to Israel, where he became a professor of mechanical and aeronautical engineering at Tel Aviv University.

In Israel, Dr. Librescu had to learn Hebrew from scratch. “It was terribly difficult,” he said, “but necessary.” Within six months, he was able to manage the language well enough to teach.

Last year, Dr. Librescu visited the United States for the first time, to give a paper at a conference at Virginia Tech. Then, warmly encouraged by Daniel Frederick, head of the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics, he returned as a visiting professor.

Dr. Librescu is interested in the foundation of the theory of shells and plates made from composite materials. Specifically, he is doing mathematical modeling of structures made from these shells and plates - the bodies of aircraft, rockets, and aero-space vehicles.
