To protect against accidental hypothermia:

• Avoid prolonged exposure to cold without protection.

• If you are on medication check with the doctor to make sure that the medicine does not change your body’s response to cold.

• Avoid alcoholic beverages because they lower the body temperature.

• Stay dry.

• Have someone stop in or telephone periodically if you live alone and are elderly.

• If you are an older person, increase the room temperature, if possible, to at least 70 degrees F.

• Wear adequate clothing, especially keeping the head warm.

• Keep an emergency blanket in your car.

If you think someone is a victim of hypothermia - get medical help immediately. It is very important for all victims of hypothermia to be checked by a physician since the effects of the cold may have caused other injuries or illness such as frostbite or pneumonia.

For more information about hypothermia or other health concerns contact the Rappahannock County Health Department in Washington or call 675-3516.

The way to stop war is to stop going to war. Stop supporting it and it will fall, just as slavery did, just as the Inquisition did.
