“Everybody’s dancing around this real sensitive issue,” noted Nancy Reeve. “It’s much more sensitive than the education we have in our schools on sex and drugs,” she said, proposing that the School Board members attend the workshop for the teachers. She endorsed the teacher training, pointing out that it is a teacher’s obligation, under state law, to report suspected cases of child abuse. “But they don’t have to make a determination whether it’s true or not. They just have to report it and then let those who are trained sort it out.”
Chairman Beverly Massie directed that any programs for the students be presented first to the School Board, and others interested enough to attend the preview session. She also affirmed the board’s obligation to excuse any child whose parents so request.
“I’d like a copy of the text of the law so we know what we’re upholding,” added Bill Oliver.
