Superintendent Robert Estabrook reported at Tuesday night’s meeting that the architects’ projected electrical costs at “$22,000 beyond what we have been expending annually. . .1 called them back and asked for a reworking of the figures,” he added.
In 1984-85, the annual electrical bill for RCHS was $14,823 and in 1985-86 it was $15,244, the superintendent said. “I know we’re talking about considerable square footage but (the estimate on the increased utility costs from the expansion) seem way out of line.” Mr. Estabrook said he’d given the figures from the past two years to the architectural firm and, with that information, “they concurred that it didn’t sound right, so they’ve gone back to the drawing boards.”
As for coal to heat the expanded building, Mr. Estabrook said the architects estimated 60 additional tons will be required. For the past two years, coal has averaged $82 a ton; if that rises to $90 per ton, the additional coal cost will be $5,400, he noted.
The only new staff position generated by the capital outlay project will be another janitor for the bigger high school, according to the superintendent.
