Another quote from Thomas Jefferson is included with the photographs: “We can always accomplish whatever we undertake with resolution.” Mrs. Baines said that the message not only encourages students to strive always for the highest goals, but also encourages educators and all other Virginians to reach toward Governor Baliles’ stated goal of making the Commonwealth one of the top 10 states in the nation in the quality of education offered to its students.
The same theme is echoed in RCEA-member classrooms, where the same photographs and quotations appear on a poster exhorting students that “Virginia led the 18th Century. Virginia can lead the 21st. It’s up to us.”
Among the special activities and observances planned for National Education Week are Administration, Support Staff, Teacher and Student Appreciation Days; a covered-dish lunch on Monday, November 17, which is a work day for teachers, and banners created by the high school’s cheerleaders to hang in front of both the high school and the elementary school during the week.
In addition to the special events and presentations during National Education Week, Rappahannock County teachers have available for parents brochures on discipline, home study aids, financing a college education, alcohol and drug abuse, latchkey children and parent-teacher conferences. “The brochures have a lot of good information to help students,” Mrs. Baines said. “And we also hope that they will serve to stimulate more parent-teacher interaction.”
