Last spring’s 1986 Rappahannock Point-to-Point races were held in the glorious sunshine of a 70-degree day. This spring’s Rappahannock races were also held under sunny skies and amidst balmy temperatures.
But this year’s races took place as regularly scheduled on the first Saturday in March, while the 1986 races had been postponed to the end of the season and were held in late April.
The unseasonably warm weather last Saturday assured huge fields of horses and a large crowd of spectators. Close to 100 horses remained after scratches to take part in 14 divisions of the eight races.
The two flat races — one for adults and one for juniors — were each split into three divisions. Two timber races — the Open Timber and the Ladies’ Timber — were also split. It is almost unheard of to have to split a timber race, especially this early in the season.
There was some grumbling about splitting the Ladies’ Race, since there were only 11 entries remaining
