The higher figures "are a valid assessment for horticultural land if it’s a producing orchard, but not if it’s an abandoned orchard,” said Supervisor Newbill Miller.
With the county following the state’s recommended assessments for forested and agricultural land, it would be consistent to adopt also the higher assessments for horticultural land, Mr. McCarthy pointed out. He added that assessments for the different land categories in the use value taxation program may be changed only during a county-wide reassessment, which Rappahannock is conducting this year.
“Let’s not hurry into this,” cautioned Supervisor Charles Estes, meeting agreement from his fellow board members to table the assessment question until next month.
In a second proposal relating to the land use taxation program, the board voted unanimously to charge a ’ $80 revalidation fee to cover the annual certification for a five-year period.
