On the way to the winner’s circle Dr. Russell commented on the race: “It was a damn tough race. I didn’t think Jolly Jake would stay in there so long.”
As usual, Dr. Russell was reluctant to take any credit at all for the strategy that developed during the race, giving all the credit to his super gelding.
“You need such a good horse to compete these days. Marat just keeps improving. And he can turn. That is very important on a course like this and it was very important today.”
Don Yovanovich, who trains Marat for Dr. Russell, trains and rides many other horses that race over fences, including the Northern Fling son I Chase the Clouds. Last week at Casanova this duo posted an impressive victory, fending off a serious stretch drive by Tingle’s Image.
This week the course got the better of the 6-year-old gelding as I Chase the Clouds fought with his groom on the way to the post and refused to be turned into the fence at the bottom of “Heartbreak Hill.” The refusal cost him the lead, and after making the jump on the second attempt I Chase the Clouds rejoined the race - dead last.
This fence is met twice on the 2V2-mile open timber course and each time Mr. Yovanovich had to guide I Chase the Clouds in a circle and reface the fence. Both times he
