United States Senator Paul Trible (R-Va) and Congressman Dan Daniel (D-Va) recently introduced legislation to eliminate the second high-level nuclear waste site and allow all waste to be stored in one site now being established in the western United States.
“There is no need for our nation to pursue plans for a second site. The western site is capable of holding all the waste generated until the year 2020. In addition, at a time of spending restraint, it makes no sense to spend billions of dollars we don’t have on a second site that’s unnecessary,” Sen. Trible said. •
“There is growing evidence that a second repository will not be needed any time soon, and in all likelihood, before a second location is needed, technological developments will have made it unnecessary,” Rep. Daniel added.
The legislation would prohibit the Department of Energy from moving ahead on selecting a second site and it removes the 70,000 metric ton cap placed on the dump site in the western United States.
