at post time. But given the inexperience of many of the. horses and riders entered in the race, officials decided that splitting the race was the only sensible decision.
The value of that decision was proven in the second division when Michelle Harper on Tina’s Sword came to grief at the jump at the bottom of “Heartbreak Hill.” Her fall also carried Mark of Eden and Marcie Smith off course and interfered with most of the other horses on the course, including the venerable Cinzano.
Fortunately, since the race had been split and there were not 11 horses coming over the jump all at once, the damage was minimized.
Patti Cassel and her champion mare, the 11-year-old Splashy Lea, had been staying well back of the pack and were able to avoid the pileup and take an advantageous spot on the inside.
Then Splashy demonstrated that her 20-month lay-off had not diminished her famous stretch-running style as she blazed past everything in sight.
