Our letters policy
Recently, the Rappahannock News has received several unsigned letters. They contained serious allegations about the county’s public schools. One was apparently written by a student, at least one of the others by a parent.
The writers requested that this newspaper forego its usual requirement that “to be considered for publication, letters must bear the writer’s signature, address and daytime telephone number.” None of the requests was granted.
There is good reason for our policy.
Experience shows that most unsigned letters have a common theme - the writer is dissatisfied with something or wishes to make the public aware of an alleged ii\justice. It’s true that many of the signed letters to the editor which this newspaper publishes also follow that theme.
There are several notable differences.
Some signed letters to the editor are complimentary. We have yet to see a single unsigned letter with a positive or comnlimentarv obiective.
