“I’m looking at it from a personal level - what we get at grade level,” countered Mrs. Baines. “And we’re getting less and less. ”
Camille Harris told the School Board that one of the elementary school’s “superior” teachers is considering leaving the county for a better paying post in Pennsylvania. “I support increasing the teachers’ salary scale by as much as you are possibly able to . . . It’s important to recognize, particularly with our best teachers, that we live in a competitive society.”
In response to a question from Holly May, Mr. Estabrook said that special services coordinator Pam Rowe is to receive the same $3,515 pay increase he has suggested for all administrative personnel. Ms. Rowe’s raise appears higher, he explained, because 90 percent of her compensation as Chapter I supervisor comes in the regular budget and 10 percent from federal sources covered in the “flow through” budget addendum, a change from the 80-20 local-federal split of the current year.
Mrs. LaClava criticized the omission of revenue projections. With an estimate on state and federal contributions to Rappahannock’s school budget, expenditures could be measured against their impact on the county’s tax rate, she said.
“We don’t know what our revenue is going to be until the General Assembly acts,” Mr. Estabrook said. With the session ending two weeks ago, the central office “received a printout from Richmond yesterday and we’re still scrutinizing that.” he added.
