In the upcoming months, the Rappahannock supervisors will take a close look at the county’s land use taxation program, with an eye towards raising the assessments on horticultural acreage.
Under the program, which is designed to preserve and protect farmland and open space, qualifying land is assessed for taxation at its use value, rather than its speculative - or fair market - value for development purposes. According to information presented by administrative assistant John McCarthy on, Monday, Rappahannock currently has 78,944 acres in land use. The county uses the state’s recommended values for agricultural and forested land but not for horticultural, he noted. Instead, the lower agricultural assessments are applied to horticultural land, Mr. McCarthy said.
“It’s difficult to determine what revenues would be raised if the horticultural assessments were adopted,” he added, noting that the range for the two horticultural categories “is considerably higher than agricultural assessments for the same acreage.” , „
