The owner-rider timber race also offered fans a thrilling finish as Marat zoomed through the stretch with the 7-year-old mare Satan’s Lite nipping at his heels.
Marat held on by a length and he and Satan’s Lite had a distance on the rest of the field. Early leader Jolly Jake, Stewart Marr riding, finished third and Manly Carter, owned and ridden by Zohar BenDov, was fourth.
Messrs. Jake and Marr had taken the lead at the drop of the flag and held onto it, though pressed by Reve du Pere, Marat, and Satan’s Lite at different times. Then, going up the mountain for the final time, Marat made his move, followed by Satan’s Lite. Jolly Jake didn’t give up.
But the real battle developed at the final fence when Satan’s Lite and Allan Olson moved within a half length, of Marat and Dr. William Russell. Dr. Russell and his catty gelding handled the final turn better than their competitors and got enough of a head start in the stretch that their victory was assured.
