while the Department of Energy is projecting declining waste production, estimates of the cost of disposal sites are rising from $19.6 billion to $26.7 billion in only 18 months. This is money we simply don’t have.
“It’s essential we end the search for a second site and I’ll do all I can to protect Virginia,” Sen. Trible said.
“We have too many options available to meet energy needs in the future to continue on the path of evergrowing nuclear waste storage. Subseabed disposal for present and future nuclear waste continues to be studied. Extended fuel bumup will result in even less waste to be stored. Magnetic ftision continues to hold promise, as does improvement in clean coal technology.
“In light of these opportunities, it makes sense to cease development of high-level nuclear waste disposal beyond our present needs,” Rep. Daniel concluded.
